EDITOR'S PICKS: LONDON FASHION WEEK

Want to dress like a fashion editor? We do. They’re experts in decoding the need-to-know trends for the seasons ahead. So, this fashion month, we invited celebrity stylist and Marie Claire contributing Fashion Editor Sarah-Rose Harrison to curate an edit of four key staples that’ll see you through the season (and long beyond).

From tailoring to transitional knitwear and cult coats, the new season is here, and its trends certainly aren’t messing about…

THE TOP COAT

If you could buy one coat and wear it forever, what would it be like?

It’s a question I’m often asked as a stylist and fashion editor and my answer every single time is a slightly oversized utilitarian one. Why? It's  an enduring classic that never ever goes out of style.

As the winter alternative to an oversized boyfriend blazer is a smart, sharp choice for every day. With nods to formal tailoring, it’s inspired by traditional military styles with a double-breasted buttoning, pressed lapels and a flared hem. Opt for a size larger than your usual go-to for a relaxed  silhouette that lends a masculine edge to slinky slip dresses and elevates tonal separates.

THE CUT-OUT KNIT

The cut-out trend isn’t going anywhere and the easiest way to dip your toe into it is with a top. There’s more than meets the eye, whilst it’s defined by the cut-out that frames the décolletage, the lightweight knit makes it a practical option for warding off chills on early evening dates.

Close fitting rib knits mean it will easily layer under blazers and jackets and tuck into high-waisted trousers, midi skirts and jeans without leaving any unsightly lumps or bumps.

Keep the cool detail in focus by foregoing a necklace. Available in three colourways, wear yours with high-waisted trousers or a midi skirt. Try unbuttoned with the collar peeking over the top of your go-to trench or tap into the aesthetic with a knitted midi.

THE STATEMENT JACKET

Now, this is a coat that understood the assignment. Playfully printed with a two-tone snake-effect motif, this faux-leather trench fully embraces the more-is-more approach and I absolutely love it. There’s a retro '70s feel to it that means it effortlessly pairs with wide-leg jeans and western boots just as well as it does with more neutral tones. Keep the look in focus by styling yours with muted monochrome separates.

THE TAILORED BLAZER

Trends come and go but a great blazer goes a long way. I’m a big fan and believe they are one of the most-hardworking pieces partly due to their ability to transform a look. Working with everything in both well-edited and overflowing wardrobes, this staple will go with every single one of your outfits: adding instant cool to a simple tee and jean look, elevating a casual jogger set and smartening up flouncy midi dresses.

Anchored by a generously sized gold-tone button and cut for an hourglass silhouette, this is a true hero piece with clever details that lend it a very contemporary vibe. It’s something you’ll reach for year-round. Wear now with denim or a satin midi dress and style with sequinned trousers for your festive parties next winter.
