MEET OUR CHRISTMAS STAR, NEPHTHYS
‘Tis the season to get cosy, so we’ve teamed up with the incredible illustrator Nephthys Foster to create the Christmas jumper collection of dreams. These vibrant and playful jumpers will add a stylish sparkle to your celebrations this year. We sat down with Nephthys herself to discover her journey as an artist, her creative process, inspiration, and what the RI x Nephthys collaboration means to her.
What was your initial reaction when River Island approached you for this collaboration?
Honestly, I let out a scream right in the middle of Earlsfield High Street! It wasn't exactly well-received by the people around me, but I couldn't help it. The invitation brought back a flood of nostalgic memories. River Island has always been known for its fun, sparkly, and slightly over-the-top style, which is very 'me.' So, it was an immediate yes! I knew this would be an exciting collaboration with a brand that is proudly British.
How did you get into painting and creating art?
I like to call myself an "accidental artist." I never planned on becoming one; it was more like art found me. In 2022, my partner and I moved into our first home, and I struggled to find artwork that truly matched my style. So, I started creating my own, spending hours after work learning different techniques and experimenting. It quickly turned into a form of self-expression that I now can't imagine my life without.
Where do you draw inspiration in your day-to-day life?
My art is inspired by the simple yet magical moments of everyday life. It could be something as small as overhearing a funny conversation on the bus or enjoying a simple dinner at the end of the day. I believe in celebrating and romanticising these little moments because life is too short not to appreciate them.
How did you approach the design process for the Christmas jumpers?
When it came to the design process, I took a trip down memory lane, reflecting on past Christmases and what made them special. For me, colour is an instant source of joy, so I wanted the jumpers to be vibrant and full of life, with the occasional cocktail reference and, of course, plenty of sparkle!
What’s your favourite piece from the Christmas jumper collection and why?
That's such a tough choice! But if I had to pick, it would be either the Doodle Cardi or the Merry Jumper. Not only because of the stories behind them but also because they both reflect my personality—playful, colourful, and just a little bit whimsical. It's like seeing myself in jumper form!
Can you share any fun or memorable moments from working on this collaboration?
The best part was definitely working with the team. Being in the head office, bouncing ideas around, and watching the designs come to life was incredibly special. We had so much fun during the creative process, and I'm so grateful for all the hard work the team put into making this a success. I think the fun we all had during this time really shines through in the final pieces.
I want these jumpers to bring joy and spark conversations. They're more than just Christmas jumpers; they're about creating lasting memories. I hope that when you pull them out of the loft next year, they bring back a flood of cherished moments, becoming a part of your Christmas celebrations for years to come.
